Across the UAE, water storage requirements vary enormously — from a small residential villa needing 5,000 litres on the roof, to a hospital complex requiring 2,000,000 litres of potable and fire water storage, to an industrial facility storing treated process water. Choosing the wrong system leads to premature failure, regulatory non-compliance, and costly replacements. This guide helps you make the right choice for your specific situation.
UAE building regulations specify minimum water storage requirements based on building type and occupancy. As a general guideline: residential buildings require 1-3 days of water supply in storage; commercial properties require storage per the UAE Plumbing Code; fire water must be stored separately per Civil Defence requirements. The type of water being stored directly determines which tank materials are acceptable. Potable (drinking) water requires NSF/ANSI certified liner or GRP tank; fire water requires Civil Defence approved tank; grey water requires corrosion-resistant materials; chemicals or treated water require specialist coatings. Using a potable water tank for chemical storage or vice versa is dangerous and non-compliant.
Above-ground vs. underground installation fundamentally changes the tank specification. Above-ground (rooftop or ground level): Zincalume or GI sectional tanks are ideal. Underground: GRP sectional tanks or specialist coated steel with anti-corrosion treatment. Basement installations must account for waterproofing and structural loads.
Large capacity above-ground potable water: Zincalume sectional tanks from Al Karwan Solution FZC (5,000 to 5,000,000 litres).
Medium capacity rooftop: GI powder coated panel tanks (1,000 to 500,000 litres).
Underground or semi-underground: GRP sectional tanks.
Fire water large capacity: Zincalume or GRP sectional tanks with Civil Defence documentation.
